It is a matter of paramount importance to know as much as possible about the breed. Experienced breeders who have devoted their life to the business of breeding this wonderful horse know every detail of the breed's appearance and behavior and are capable of recognizing a potential horserace winner.

Thoroughbreds have an athletic body build and reach the height of about 64 inches. Some traits resemble those of the Arabian horse. The Thoroughbred has expressive eyes set wide apart. The legs are long and straight. A peculiar feature of the breed is a thin skin. One can see the vessels and a well-developed muscular system. Thoroughbreds come in chestnut, brown, red, gray, and black colors. They may also have white markings. Outstanding physical qualities of the breed are partly due to intensive gaseous exchange, a large heart and lungs.

Many countries take pride in their Thoroughbreds. The quality of breed population in the country is dependent on many factors, responsible breeding being the most important. The leading breeders register their horses in a Stud Book, which has a number of advantages. Stud Book registration is necessary for maintaining the breed and allows breeders to trace the ancestry of horses and choose the best breeding stock. Thoroughbreds that result from well-planned breeding programs are of good quality and tend to achieve much success in events designed for Thoroughbred horses.
