Many horses of this breed suffer from EIPH (Exercise Induced Pulmonary Haemorrhage), which is the result of over exercise. The condition is characterized by the bleeding at the nostrils, which becomes more severe with age. It is supposed that bleeding occurs in the lungs of the animal.

They originated from the horses that were brought to Great Britain in the 17th century. Breeders bred only the quickest and strongest horses to produce the best foals.
