There are generally more than 350 various breeds of horses and ponies. These breeds are divided into four main groups. “Light” horses have small bones, thin legs and weighing less than 1300 pounds. “Heavy” horses can weigh up to 2000 pounds and are strong with large bones and sturdy legs. Ponies are usually not more than 58 inches tall. The fourth group includes wild horses.

Horses exist in a great variety of temperaments, sizes and colors. These animals can be either the same colors all over or whole colors and a mixture of colors or broken colors. The most commonly met whole colors are bay, black, brown, chestnut, dun, cream, and grey. The broken colors are piebald, skewbald, roan and spotted.
